Energy Crops - Short rotation Coppice - Willow

Biomass in the form of Energy Crops is required in significant quantities to meet the government's targets within the UK's Renewables Obligation. Amongst UK growers, there is now increasing recognition that Short Rotation Coppice (SRC) willow provides a financially viable and low risk crop with a healthy end user demand, representing an attractive alternative to traditional arable crops.

Reasons to Grow SRC Willow as an Energy Crop:

  • A financially viable crop
Willow can produce equal if not higher returns to those achieved from traditional arable crops grown on productive land. Farmers and landowners can earn additional income from growing SRC willow on set aside land.

  • Availability of Establishment Grants
The government is actively encouraging the establishment of SRC with Energy Crop Scheme Establishment Grants. Other grants are available for Scotland and Northern Ireland.

  • Longer Term Contracts
Long term supply contracts with prices - RPI linked providing financial stability and sustainability.

  • No investment or specialised knowledge required
Renewable Fuels Ltd can provide a full range of services and agreements can be tailored to meet the needs of individual farmers including renting land where a guaranteed return in preferred. All works can be contracted out or shared with the farmer.

  • Low intensive, low capital and high yielding crop of the future
Piece of mind that you are growing a high quality crop for the future that demands little maintenance once established.

  • Spread your options
Farmers are being actively encouraged to diversify away from food production. Demand for energy crops is growing rapidly.

  • Help the environment
Growing renewable fuel for energy reduces the UK's dependence on fossil fuels whilst also reducing carbon emissions.
